Traditional techniques like reverse osmosis and thermal distillation can demand substantial energy inputs, necessitate chemical treatments, and create a concentrated salty byproduct called brine. Disposing of this liquid brine back into the sea can elevate local salinity levels and lower oxygen availability, thereby harming marine life.

To combat these environmental challenges, experts at the University of Rochester designed an innovative solar thermal approach that generates potable water without producing liquid brine or needing pre-treatment chemicals. According to ScienceDaily, this self-cleaning technology processes seawater efficiently and captures nearly all the remaining salt as a solid. Beyond producing clean water, the system holds the potential to extract useful minerals such as lithium from the leftover material.
