New Solar Desalination System Eliminates Harmful Brine Waste

Researchers have created a solar-powered method to turn ocean water into drinkable supplies without leaving behind liquid salt waste.

Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana led the inauguration of a desalination plant system in the country’s northernmost outpost, Mavulis Island in Batanes province yesterday, 26 May 2021.
The desalination plant, which is capable of producing 1,500 gallons of potable water daily, was completed through the partnership of the AFP’s Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM) and the AFP Savings and Loan Association Incorporated (AFPSLAI), with the latter donating Php 3,089,600.00 for the plant’s construction.

Millions of global residents currently lack dependable drinking water, leading many areas to depend heavily on turning ocean water into fresh supplies. Traditional methods like reverse osmosis and thermal distillation provide necessary hydration resources, but they demand substantial energy inputs and typically require chemical treatments.

A major byproduct of these conventional techniques is a concentrated liquid waste called brine, which can lower oxygen levels and increase salinity when pumped back into the marine environment. ScienceDaily reports that researchers at the University of Rochester have now designed a different system to bypass these environmental hazards entirely.

Developed at URochester's Institute of Optics, the new solar thermal technology successfully generates fresh water while converting nearly all remaining salt into a solid rather than a liquid residue. This approach ultimately demonstrates that desalination can be achieved efficiently without producing the harmful runoff that damages aquatic ecosystems.
