French Court Rejects Under-Fifteen Social Media Ban

France's high constitutional authority has determined that legislation prohibiting children under fifteen from accessing social media platforms violates the constitution.

Added 8/14/2026

According to the Seoul Economic Daily, the nation's highest constitutional body invalidated the measure after lawmakers requested a review of the child protection legislation. The authority determined that a total restriction placed an excessive and unnecessary burden on the freedom of expression and communication for minors.

The targeted legislation would have deactivated existing accounts and applied to various platforms and messaging services. However, the court pointed out that the restricted sites included platforms where risks to youth had not been proven, and added that the mandated age-verification process compromised user privacy.
