Dr. Anthony Fauci turned down a request to appear voluntarily before a second Senate panel on Friday, according to reporting by The Independent. This decision follows a vote by majority Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee along partisan lines last week to hold the infectious disease expert in contempt.
An attorney representing the former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases sent a letter to Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson characterizing any attempt to force an appearance before a Senate subcommittee as an effort to harass or degrade him for political reasons.
The latest developments stem from a July 29 hearing regarding the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic where Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination numerous times, resulting in an August 6 contempt vote and a potential referral to the Justice Department.
