Home purchase cancellations near historic highs
A significant percentage of nationwide home sales fell through in September as elevated borrowing costs led purchasers to reconsider their decisions.

Information from Redfin indicates that 14.5% of properties nationwide failed to complete their sales during September, representing the highest proportion outside of the initial pandemic period. According to Yahoo Finance, this trend highlights the impact of increased mortgage rates on the residential real estate sector.
While various factors such as home inspections, financing obstacles, or shifting preferences can cause agreements to dissolve, transactions are more frequently terminated when purchasers possess greater leverage and choices. Cities heavily favoring purchasers, including Jacksonville and Tampa in Florida along with Las Vegas, experienced cancellation proportions nearing 20%.
Conversely, competitive seller-dominated regions like San Francisco saw significantly fewer canceled transactions, with only 2.8% of deals collapsing, demonstrating that contract failure rates vary widely depending on local market conditions.
