OpenAI to Sever Ties With Cursor Following SpaceX Acquisition

SpaceX finalized a $60 billion all-stock purchase of Anysphere, the creator of the Cursor platform, earlier this month after announcing the transaction in June, according to MarketChacha. Following the ownership change, OpenAI informed SpaceX on August 28 of its plan to end the contract due to trust concerns and prior disputes involving Elon Musk-led ventures, exercising a specific ownership-transition clause rather than citing technical issues.

While users will lose direct access, they can still utilize GPT models within Cursor by supplying their own API keys, and OpenAI will maintain availability through its own integrated development environment extensions. Furthermore, the platform remains functional because it integrates offerings from other providers, and Anthropic quickly announced plans to boost computing capacity for its Claude models on the service.

This development highlights tightening access restrictions by model providers during ownership shifts and marks the newest friction point in the ongoing rivalry between Musk and OpenAI.
