Donald Trump has announced plans to substantially scale back joint military exercises between the US and South Korea, which were scheduled to begin with thousands of troops involved. The Guardian reports that the decision comes despite warnings from military officials from both nations that North Korea is enhancing its combat skills and battlefield tactics through the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

The upcoming maneuvers under Ulchi Freedom Shield were set to include roughly 18,000 South Korean soldiers, American forces, and personnel representing multiple member states of the United Nations Command. Although outright cancellation was no longer possible, the US president stated that he instructed the defense secretary to curtail American involvement because he views the exercises as costly and inappropriate.

Ultimately, the directive stems from what the president described as a strong personal connection with Kim Jong-un, whom he considers respectful and unthreatening during his time in office, alongside grievances regarding South Korea's stance on Iran.
