The cancellation of Hockey Night in Canada: Punjabi Edition was revealed on Friday, bringing an end to an 18-year run that began in 2008. The sportscast shared a statement on X expressing pride in uniting the community around hockey and highlighting South Asian players and families.
Rogers Sportsnet, holding the national rights for NHL games, acknowledged the termination as a tough choice. The company told CBC that audience numbers were no longer high enough to maintain the production over the long term.
Although viewership proved insufficient to keep the broadcasts going, organizers and the network both recognized the significant impact the program had on Punjabi-speaking hockey fans.
