Flight Crews Face Highest Radiation Cancer Death Rates

A recent study shows that pilots and flight attendants experience the highest proportions of radiation-related cancer deaths among hundreds of U.S. occupations.

Researchers evaluated death certificates from the National Vital Statistics System covering nearly 13 million individuals across 503 professions between 2020 and 2024. The analysis adjusted for demographic and socioeconomic variables while comparing flight crews to both ground-based aviation workers and other employment sectors.

The findings revealed that approximately 6.9 percent of deaths for flight attendants and 6.7 percent of deaths for pilots stemmed from radiation-related malignancies, ranking these two professions above all other surveyed occupations, including nuclear technologists. According to hms.harvard.edu, aircrews exhibited significantly elevated mortality rates for breast, central nervous system, and prostate cancers as well as melanoma, with pilots also showing higher rates of leukemia.

While aviation workers absorb the largest annual effective dose of ionizing radiation among domestic workforces due to high-altitude cosmic exposure, U.S. aircrews lack federal dose limits or monitoring mandates. The study's authors conclude that these results support evaluating occupational safety measures that align with actual exposure levels.
